MADEIRA - The story behind the board

"The ancient settlers of Madeira believed that the formation of the island was the work of Neptune, the roman god of the sea who, with is hands may have taken a fistful of lava and a whirlpool of salt and moulded them into a magnificent rock."

Separating the thoughts and dividing them in several doors is, sometimes, the best way to tell a story. After that, one may be able to tell it driven by a coherent line of thought, like a road movie with several happenings during the trip. And if something special happens in the gas station, like bumping into a funny awkward character, the idea behind the inspiration of that particular episode is partly what the film is all about.

Madeira, the game, is the movie we directed following a structure given by the epic historical script. Hopefully you'll find it interesting. It should help you understand why the characters on the game are like they are and why are you supposed to do what you actually do.

The Island

The Island of Madeira was discovered. Literally. I mean, when sometimes people say that something was discovered, that's actually not truth as natives already lived there for a long time but, Madeira, really was empty!

And that is amazing if you're planning a board game. Think about it. Empty island to populate and start from scratch.

Plus, it also served as the opening scene of the Portuguese Empire as its localization and later, status quo, determined loads of episodes for the Crown.

The Captaincies

When the Island first was populated it was given to 3 Captains, each one of them with one region to administrate.
That's why Madeira has 3 regions where to play: Porto Santo, Machico and Funchal.

The king asked each one of these captains to populate the island, develop the cities and improve the economy. If they did good, then more favors of the king were granted, like money, lands, noble titles and also public recognition.

The king actually asked for all of these things and we may find them all in the king's requests, which give you the most of the victory points during the game.

Sugar

After the first colonists arrived in the island, D. Henrique, the "Navegador" introduced sugar cane in the fields in order to make profit. At some point in its history, Madeira started to remove wheat fields from the plantations and plant sugar cane only, as it was the main economy source of the locals, specially merchants and nobles. It was a very very prosperous time for the islanders, with loads of money. Sugar gave people the money as the profits are really huge and the island was excellent for the crop. That's why players get more money in Madeira if you deal with sugar, more than with any other thing in the game.

This rush for the money made all the wheat disappear from the island and people didn't even have enough to eat. They starved for money!

During the game, players will find a change in its course, removing fields of wheat and planting sugar fields.

Brasil

After reaching Brasil, Portuguese seafarers started to produce sugar there. Also in Africa. Starting in that moment, these two other territories competed both with the sugar produced in Madeira, resulting in a shorter profit for the islanders. People from there had to change their core business in order to survive and that's when the wine of Madeira appeared as a solution.

That's when players can see the sugar fields turned into wine on the board.

Wine

Wine is one of the first things ever produced when christians populate something because it serves the cult of the church. Also, the wine was part of each ship crossing the oceans searching for new lands for the Portuguese crown. During the game, if a player wants to set sail and go on discoveries sponsored by the king, he must take some wine too. But then he also is rewarded by the king for participating in such adventure!

Madeira wine is actually the happy result of one of the trips to the tropics. The wine was so much better when returning home than when leaving for the discovery. Why? Because the heat from the tropics improved the wine which is still something done today to produce Madeira wine. They place the wine in 'Estufas' simulating the tropic heat.

Agricola

Why should we have a feeding phase? Well, in fact, what happened in Madeira was that with the previously explained above, turning wheat into sugar because of the profits, increased starvation.

The lack of wheat was indeed a problem and the island had to import some wheat in order to survive. But many didn't. Madeira, the game, needed to have a feeding phase because it is a very important part of its history.

City of Guilds

Many important families started to flourish in the island because of its richness and wealth. Cities got bigger and bigger and even some famous characters like Christopher Columbus lived in Madeira.

Players may contribute to the development of all of the 3 cities thus getting favors from some of these important families which, at some point of Madeira's history, dressed the island with power.

If you're able to capture the influence of these families your life gets easier.

Pirates

Pirates and Corsairs, to be more precise, were pretty important in Madeira's history and so they are in Madeira's board story, too. Corsairs were hired by many european nations in order to loot the islands. More than a dozen massive attacks destroyed large portions of lands and also killed lots of people.

In the game, players get pirates when they do 'something wrong'. That's our way of saying you shouldn't have done that! To populate the island many prisoners and criminals came from the mainland Portugal. They were not very sociable or nice. If something goes wrong they respond to that. They become pirates. And you may want to contribute the most to catch the bad guys and put them in 'prison'. This would, for sure, grant you the good will of the king.

Madeira

Madeira means wood. Wood is a bit more than just relevant in the game because it was also more than only relevant in the island. And players should feel the pressure of getting the wood and the importance of being able to colect wood.

Deforest the island, build ships or enlarge each one of the cities, all are ways to make the king happy. And also are ways to get money and wealth!

The constrains of not being able to get wood is something each player must be determined to avoid when playing Madeira. Because wood is the middle (first and last) name of the game!

Madeira - Pearl of the Atlantic - Description

Madeira (Portuguese for wood) is an island officially discovered in early XV century by Portuguese seafarers. The wild fertile landscape covered by a dense forest and the importance of the strategic position in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean made this a place of huge significance in the Portuguese discoveries. What happened in Madeira was the “laboratory” of what would later be known as the Portuguese Empire.

Wheat plantations were the first means for the survival in the island. After that, when D. Henrique decided to increase the economy of the Empire, sugar became the core business of Madeira. With the offer of sugar coming from other places of the world (such as Africa and Brazil) the financial results of sugar were not enough and the production of the very famous Madeira wine became the most important economic product of the island.

Players try to gain prestige and money adapting themselves to these constraints, working their way to find better fields for farming the right goods and obtaining the precious wood, essential to put up new structures in the cities and build ships for trading in foreign markets, and taking part of new expeditions.

Madeira: Pearl of the Atlantic is a heavy strategic game, settled in the original administrative division of the island in 3 captaincies (Funchal, Machico and Porto Santo), where the ultimate goal is to develop the Island gaining the most prestige in the Portuguese Crown.

Game play is tight and tense, full of difficult choices with everybody getting engaged in a dynamic set of mechanics that allow for a great replayability.

The game revolves around a new dice mechanic, where players will use Guilds and Royal Army dice to have access to the different captaincies, hire the five influent characters hosted in the main buildings of the island and determine the cost to perform the action of the building currently associated to the hired character.

The King will assign a series of tasks regarding settlements, enlistments, expeditions, trades and urbanization of the island. Each round, players must choose one of the tasks to pursue. For 3 times, the King will check the assigned tasks and give prestige points accordingly. Players must carefully choose the correct timing to show him their achievements. Too early and you’ll gain not enough prestige, too late and you risk someone else will stole you the best opportunities. Will you have what it takes to overcome all of these endeavors ?

Beware, wheat may become scarce, money is never enough, the population is hungry and the shadow of piracy is growing…

Bye Essen 12, Hi Essen 13 !

Now that Essen is gone we are aiming for the next one. "What's your Game?" confirmed that Madeira will be published in 2013! Great news!!!

We had lots of people asking for the game in Essen. We're sorry for not being possible to personally respond to all of the people that searched for the game but somehow we were busy sometimes with meetings, other times just travelling around in geek mode.

For those of you that are supporting us from the beginning, thank you. We very much appreciate all the cheering on this project that hopefully will deliver what we all game lovers want - a terrific game!

All in all and as a result, Essen 12 gave us more dice. That's right guys! For the more sceptics Madeira has now more dice than before! Fingers crossed for lucky Essen 13. And once again, thank you!

The creation of Madeira - a project log

The source of the initial idea for the creation of a game is often the mechanics or the theme. In Madeira, the initial idea was both! The mechanics were related to a new dice way to play games. We hope players will find it interesting and innovative enough. The theme was the easiest part to get into. Look at this: you have a real Island that was part of a true and real experience for the world conquering! This island was completely empty when people started to inhabit it. The king said something like this: "I'll give you a few lands and you can start settling there and see how it goes. I'll divide the Island in 3 major "provinces", with 3 different captains and each one of you have full rights above everyone".

So, the first people arriving in Madeira were the first colonists with only a dream for a better life and a good set of opportunities to flourish as new wealthier men.

When we started to read about Madeira and its history something popped up in our heads immediately: First settlers in the island cultivated the essential wheat only for their own survival but for that they had to clear the woods (Madeira is actually the Portuguese word for wood). This wheat production for only a few inhabitants served also the crown - Portugal - because there was a shortage in the cereal production. Also, the enormous quantity of wood gathered in the Island was really needed for the ship construction in Lisbon in order to conquer the world!

In the second period of the Island's history, we learnt that D. Henrique (O Navegador) introduced the sugar cane in Madeira. Sugar cane became the main core business there and it served markets all over Europe enriching the Island and making it the center of the "white gold" for some time. With the excellent results provided by the sugar, people in the island started to replace wheat fields for sugar fields in order to make more money thus creating a necessity of wheat in the island. But the sugar worked so well at that time for the Portuguese crown that it was taken to other parts of the Empire, specially Brazil. With the Brazilian sugar flooding the markets, with its massive production, Madeira was getting behind because its production couldn't compete with such a huge competitor. This event takes us to the third part of Madeira's history: the wine!

The very much appreciated Madeira's wine was a result of randomness combined with necessity. The ships transporting the wine from Madeira to other places (India, English colonies) got back from their voyages bringing some wine that hadn't been consumed. People started to acknowledge that this "returning" wine was better than the "turning" one. It happens that the heat of the tropics combined with the swing on the ship's hold produced the best wine ever tasted! The Island once again started to drop sugar for wine and the economy changed again.
With all of this standing in front of us we thought for ourselves: here's our game. The theme, point by point, is right in front of us!
